Tallahassee pest control

We Florida's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Tallahassee rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Tallahassee pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Tallahassee Rodent Removal Tip:

Are rats able to swim or do they drown?
Think of the sheer range of habitats in which you can find rats living - down burrows in your garden, up in the attic, and amongst boxes in garages and sheds. But there's one place that we often picture: sewers. Brimming with water from drains and toilets, it's essentially a semi-aquatic environment. Yet, rats thrive here.

It might not be what you expect, but rats are excellent swimmers. At least, some species are.

In fact, rats have been recorded swimming up to half a mile in open water. Considering their size, that's a phenomenal feat. So, they might prefer dry land, but that doesn't mean they can't survive a dip into the water.

Can all rats swim?
Certain species of rats are less capable swimmers. It also depends on the temperament of the individual rat. Like people, rats have different abilities, making some better swimmers than others.

It all largely depends on need. Rats that thrive in the desert are likely to be less water-adaptable than rats that thrive in big cities or near bodies of water

Being wild animals, rats are always on the hunt for food. It's often what sends them down into the sewers. Vast amounts of food waste are flushed down the drain into sewers, presenting a feast for the rats that live down there. Nor do the rats mind the large volumes of liquid.

Amazingly, rats can tread water for days at a time. In some rare cases, they've managed to stay afloat for three to four days. Then if they sniff out food, they'll swim that half a mile to get there. However, if they are forced to tread water for long periods or become wholly submerged, they will eventually drown.

But rats can even swim underwater, holding their breath for up to 3 minutes. That means they find no problem swimming up water pipes, if necessary.

Rats and pipes
Increasingly rats are swimming out of toilets in search of food. Rats have a very low tolerance for hunger. So, if they sense food, they will go hunting. That's led to thousands of cases of rats appearing where they're least wanted.

Being a significant carrier of diseases, this poses serious health consequences. Suppose a rat gets into your bathroom or home. In that case, it will likely have contaminated your water system and the immediate area.

If you spot a rat appear in your toilet bowl, feel free to flush. It probably won't stop the rat entirely, but it will give you time to think. You might consider pouring bleach down. This will kill the rat, but it will also block your pipes requiring a plumber. Meanwhile, pouring poison down will contaminate the local area, killing off wildlife and local pets.

Ideally, you'd contact a local professional, who could snare the rat and either dispose of it or release it far away. But if you do hear of rat-infested sewers in your neighborhood, consider a one-way valve for your sewer. It allows sewage out but no rats in.

Conclusion
Rats are incredible swimmers, capable of covering vast distances. They can even hold their breath underwater for three minutes and tread water for days. Therefore, drowning a rat is easier said than done. For homeowners, this all has severe consequences for piping. It is essential to know what not to do if a rat is discovered in your piping. Don't pour poison or bleach down the drain. It can block pipes or lead to the rat chewing through plastic piping. Instead, contact a professional as soon as possible.
